Relationship boundaries need to identify participation and follow-through. A statement such as you must never upset me is not a usable limit because it gives the other person responsibility for an outcome no one can guarantee.
A worked situation: Dinner interrupted by calls
Fictional example. A couple discusses evening phone use. One partner asks for a device-free meal and states that work calls require a different dinner time; both can negotiate the arrangement.
Work through these questions: Dinner interrupted by calls
| Question or field | Fictional completed example |
|---|---|
| Shared situation? | Dinner interrupted by calls |
| Request? | Device-free meal |
| Personal action? | Schedule dinner outside on-call hours |
| What is negotiable? | Meal timing |
| What is essential? | Respectful communication |
A relationship boundary includes your next action
A request states what you would like the other person to do; a boundary states what you will participate in or do next. Shared obligations may still require negotiation. Write these separately before the conversation. In a threatening situation, planning support and safety takes priority over demonstrating that you can deliver a perfect boundary statement.
