Worked example — SAMPLE DATA
Every dollar amount, time and yield below is fictional. Replace it with your measured costs; it is not a market rate.
| Input or calculation | Fictional example |
|---|---|
| Cake, binder and coating | $21.00 |
| Base forming and coating labor | 90 minutes × $20/60 = $30.00 |
| Saleable pops after test pieces | 30 |
| Base cost per pop | ($21 + $30) / 30 = $1.70 |
| Order quantity | 12 |
| Sticks, bags and ties | 12 × $0.18 = $2.16 |
| Order-specific decoration labor | 24 minutes × $20/60 = $8.00 |
| Presentation box | $3.00 |
| Order cost | 12 × $1.70 + $2.16 + $8 + $3 = $33.56 |
| Price at 30% markup | $33.56 × 1.30 = $43.628, rounded to $43.63 |
Build the price from your actual process
Choose one production basis. If the cake is baked specifically for pops, allocate its entire relevant recipe cost. If you use otherwise saleable cake from another recipe, transfer its documented cost once. Do not treat usable cake as free merely because it is already in the kitchen.
Track test and broken pieces in the actual yield. Breakage varies with your own process, coating and transport, so this guide supplies no industry loss percentage. For a new design, make a small trial and record the time and saleable output before promising a large run.
Separate a repeated drizzle from a new character design. Molds, painting, multiple coating colors and individual lettering can change setup and finishing time substantially. Put the agreed design scope in the quote rather than assigning an unexplained premium to the word custom.
Presentation is an order-level choice. A board, foam insert, stand or reusable rental display may belong to the order rather than each pop. If a returnable stand is involved, distinguish its sale or rental charge from any refundable security arrangement; verify your contract separately.
Count the finished presentation and the delivery workload before sending a quote. Temperature-sensitive transport, venue setup and handover time require measured assumptions and food-safety judgment, not a generic distance-only promise. Use the companion calculator for a new batch quantity; this guide helps define what is included.
Validate before sending a quote
Use non-negative costs and labor, a positive whole-number saleable yield, and one consistent unit for each ingredient. Do not divide by zero. Margin must be below 100%; a price based on cost cannot produce a 100% margin. Keep tax, deposits and collected payments separate from production cost and revenue. Check the completed order against the scope you promised.
