Worked example — SAMPLE DATA
Every dollar amount, time and yield below is fictional. Replace it with your measured costs; it is not a market rate.
| Input or calculation | Fictional example |
|---|---|
| Saleable yield | 30 cookies after two test pieces |
| Batch ingredients | $12.00 |
| Mix, bake and cleanup | 45 minutes at a fictional $20/hour = $15.00 |
| Plain batch overhead | $6.00 |
| Base cost per cookie | ($12 + $15 + $6) / 30 = $1.10 |
| Decoration on six cookies | 6 × 4 minutes × $20/60 = $8.00 |
| Box for the six-cookie order | $1.20 |
| Order cost | 6 × $1.10 + $8 + $1.20 = $15.80 |
| Price at 40% markup | $15.80 × 1.40 = $22.12 |

Separate sale formats before quoting. A dozen mixed cookies, six custom decorated cookies and a party tray do not require the same packing or design work. Record the number of designs, colors, individually wrapped pieces and messages. A photograph is a discussion reference, not a promise of exact replication.
Count saleable pieces after breakage and test cookies. Include setup and cleanup in the batch even when the mixer runs unattended. Decoration time belongs only to the pieces that receive that decoration; charging it to every plain cookie can conceal the cost difference between formats.
For a repeat design, time a complete batch instead of assuming every piece takes the same time as the first. Keep design consultation and a new stencil or cutter as visible order costs. Equipment purchases are not automatically the full cost of a single order: choose and document an allocation method.
State the sale unit and minimum order explicitly. If the calculated unit amount has more than two decimals, retain precision through the order calculation and round the final customer amount. Delivery and any legally applicable tax are separate from the example. A rounding choice should not silently change the promised quantity.
A larger order may save setup time but can increase oven cycles, storage and packing labor. Recalculate those constraints before offering a quantity discount. This guide compares formats; the sugar-cookie calculator is better for entering decoration minutes directly.

Use non-negative costs and labor, a positive whole-number saleable yield, and one consistent unit for each ingredient. Do not divide by zero. Margin must be below 100%; a price based on cost cannot produce a 100% margin. Keep tax, deposits and collected payments separate from production cost and revenue. Check the completed order against the scope you promised.
