Inputs that distinguish a simple set from a detailed one

Record sellable cookies per batch, requested cookies, batch ingredient cost, shared preparation hours, decorating minutes per cookie, design setup hours, hourly labor rate, wrapping cost per cookie, outer-box cost and overhead.

Keep design setup separate: mixing six icing colors or preparing a custom stencil takes time even when the order is small. The finishing-time input covers the work repeated on each cookie.

Formula for a set

Batches = round requested cookies ÷ sellable batch yield upward

Labor hours = shared preparation hours + design setup hours + requested cookies × decorating minutes ÷ 60

Set cost = batch ingredients + labor hours × labor rate + individual wrapping + outer boxes + overhead

Set price = set cost ÷ (1 − chosen margin)

Worked example: 72 individually wrapped cookies

Assume three batches at $8 each, 1.5 preparation hours, 0.5 design setup hours and two decorating minutes for each of 72 cookies. Labor is 1.5 + 0.5 + 144/60 = 4.4 hours. At $25/hour, labor costs $110.

Add $18 wrapping, $6 outer boxes and $12 overhead. Total set cost is $24 + $110 + $18 + $6 + $12 = $170. A chosen 20% margin gives $170/0.80 = $212.50 for six dozen, or $35.42 per dozen when displayed to cents. Quote the actual set total to avoid rounding discrepancies across six boxes.

What happens when lettering takes longer?

At four minutes per cookie, finishing takes 4.8 hours instead of 2.4. The additional 2.4 hours costs $60 before the pricing adjustment. That is why a reference image must become a task estimate rather than a vague label such as “custom cookies.”

Validate before using the result

Require positive whole quantities and yield, nonnegative time and cost inputs, and a margin below 100%. Check whether decorating minutes already include lettering; counting it again in setup would inflate labor. Record box capacity and round required boxes upward. Make breakage visible in sellable yield rather than counting broken pieces as paid units.

The example is original and illustrative. It does not establish market rates or guarantee the chosen margin after unplanned rework. Record actual minutes for each design so future quotes improve.

Baker Quote — $29 one-time provides a broader cost-to-quote workflow. This set calculation helps you identify the cookie-specific time and packaging figures to enter.
